Sightseeing in Estonia

Dear all,

Here is your task for today's lesson.

Please work in pairs and one team with three people to come up with a draft presentation about one sight in Estonia.

In order to do that, please take the following steps. Read through the whole task first so that you know how to plan your time.

A. Go through the different lists that you and your partner and your classmates have created about the top sights to visit. Choose one sight in Estonia that both of you like. Here are the direct links to the lists from different people:
  • Aneth (a docx document via Dropbox)
  • Hanna (a docx document via Dropbox)
  • Eliis (a docx document via Dropbox)
  • Laura (a blog posting)
  • Rainer (an odt document via Dropbox)
  • Roman (a blog posting)
  • Tuuli (an odt document via Dropbox)

B. For the presentation, please prepare the draft of the following slides:
  1. General introduction - what is this place, what can you see / do there, when should one go there
  2. Reasons for visiting - why do you recommend this place (please give at least five reasons)
  3. Background information - history of the place, some stories / legends, additional information
  4. How to take the best out of the visit to this place - recommendations for visiting: when to go, what to see/do while there, what not to miss, what should the visitor read / do before the visit and after the visit, what should the visitor bring along with her / him
  5. Other useful information about the place
  6. Links for further reading
Add some pictures to make your slides more interesting and fun.

NB! Before you start doing the slides, please divide the responsibility for finding out the necessary information about the topics!

C. E-mail me at triin.noorkoiv@tyhg.edu.ee the result of your lesson work (please save it as ppt, not pptx!).

In the e-mail, please list also the tasks each of you had and the name of the person in your team who is responsible for them.

You will receive personal feedback for the next steps.

Cooperation + BBC Learning English

Dear 7b students,

The time has com to sweep the dust* from our blogs, which we haven't used for quite some time already! :)

You have two tasks here in this lesson.

1. 20-minute writing

Please write a short essay about your opinion on the topic of *cooperation*. Please use Word to write it and then send the document to me via e-mail (triin.noorkoiv@tyhg.edu.ee).

The title: What is cooperation for me

Please answer the following questions in your essay:

  • How does good cooperation look like for you (what do people do when you can say that they are working together well)?
  • In your opinion, why is it important/valuable to work together with others?

The length of your essay: ~150 words.
You can use automatic word count to check the number of the words that you have written. Ask teacher Hanna about it if you haven't used it before.

Please remember the main learning point from writing tasks from the last quarter: organise your text (introduction, the main body, conclusion).

The feedback to your story will be based on the same evaluation scale that we used last quarter: organisation, vocabulary, grammar and spelling, and task achievement.

2. Review BBC's web page for English learners

Please look around on this page and write a blog posting with at least 2 things that you find useful for yourself for English learning. Please copy-paste the direct links and explain the reasons why you think they are useful.

If you don't have your blog right now, please send your review to me by e-mail.

Letter to the UK

Your goal today is to get ready with your part of the letter that we are going to send to Crown Woods College. We have already prepared our main introductions, but there are a few more things for us to do!

1. Answering the questions from the UK students. Please answer these 3 questions on your blog.
  • What do you think are the 3 most important rules (reeglid) in our school? If you wish, you can also take a look at our school's house rules (kodukord) for ideas :)
  • Have you learned touch typing (masinakiri)? If yes, where / how? If not, do you think you need to learn it?
  • What do you do after school? Do you have any regular (regulaarsed) hobbies / trainings that you go in for?

2. Coming up with your questions to the UK students. Please think of 3 questions you would like to ask the students at Crown Woods College and write them to your blog.

3. Which place in Estonia would you recommend the UK students to visit? Please think of one place which you think it would be interesting for them to see. Write about it on your blog:
  • What place is it?
  • Why would it be great to visit it?
  • Where can they get more information - is there a home page where they can find out more information?
  • Please add 1-2 photos
Have a great lesson and end of the week! See you on Monday!

My favourite musician, actor, athlete, artist or writer

Dear 6B student,

I hope your weekend was wonderful! Unfortunately I am not with you today because of a training (koolitus), but here is your task (ülesanne) for today's class.

1. Please take a look at your textbook page 84. Choose one of them, David Copperfield or Eminem, and read the text about him.

2. Then, open your workbook and do exercise 3 on page 91 - make up questions about the person about whom you read the story.

3. Now, please write a blog posting (blogipostitus) about somebody you like - your favourite musician, actor, athlete, artist, or writer.

Just like it was in the stories about David Copperfield and Eminem,  you can talk about these things:
  • When and where was she / he born?
  • How was her / his family like?
  • What did she / he do when she / he was young?
  • How did she / he become famous?
  • Why do you like her / him?
Write at least 12 sentences.

Please add pictures and / or videos to your blog post.

The title of your posting: "My favourite ..." (musician / actor / athlete / artist / writer).

If it happens that you cannot do a blog posting for some reason, please send your text to me as an e-mail. Add the links (lisa lingid) to photos and / or videos, too.

Please pay attention to spelling and grammar. Also, please make logical paragraphs (loogilised lõigud) to your story. If you need, you can use online Estonian-English dictionaries, for example this one: http://aare.pri.ee/dictionary.html.

Best wishes,
Your teacher

Inspirational quote

Welcome to 2011 and the new quarter!

What is a thought that will help and inspire (inspireerima) you to achieve (saavutama) your goals? Please choose one quote (tsitaat) and post it to your blog. Also, please write down the author of the quote if it is known; if the author is not known, you can say that it's 'anonymous'.

Title of the posting: My inspirational quote.

You can look for quotes using Google or other search engines. Just type in the word 'quote' and start browsing.

Feel free to add photos to illustrate your quote, if you wish.

PS If there are any words in this text that you don't understand very well, please look them up! Use any of the dictionaries that are listed on the right hand side menu of this blog, for example this one.
